Essex Fells is the smallest community in Essex County with just over 2100 residents, and also one of its most desirable. New Jersey Monthly ranked the community among 2010's top 10 places to live in New Jersey.
The borough is in the western part of Essex County and surrounded by the communities of Verona, West Caldwell, Caldwell, Roseland and West Orange. In an area approximately 1.3 square miles, it has no commercial district and residents shop in the nearby communities including Montclair. While there is no train nor bus service directly from Essex Fells to NYC – commuters can take the DeCamp bus which runs express to the Port Authority from Bloomfield Avenue in Caldwell and Roseland or drive to the Port Authority Trans-Hudson train station in Harrison about 20 minutes away and ride the PATH to lower Manhattan.
Students attend the Essex Fells School (K-6 grade) which has approximately 250 students. Students go on to West Essex Regional Junior and Senior High School that share a 70 acre campus in North Caldwell. Students from Fairfield, North Caldwell and Roseland also attend that school.
Homes vary in price with many listed for over $1 million. Property taxes for residents are comparatively low for Essex County, as the borough sells its water to three neighboring communities.
